Packing for Relocation – Tips To Get A Good Packing Kit

May 21, 2010

What these kits actually offer you differs from company to company, and on the package that you purchase. While some companies offer new material only, others make cheaper kits by using old and used boxes in good shape, which is a great idea when you are looking to save every penny.

So what exactly goes into the making of these supply kits? The first things of course are, boxes. They are conveniently made in small sizes for books and CDs, which weigh too much when stacked in large cases. The cube shaped boxes are good for packing glass barware and cutlery of smaller sizes. The medium size eighteen inch boxes are perfect for large and light animals etc. The very large boxes are good for fans, stuffed toys and the likes of those. The extra large boxes can hold the rest of the items which do not seem to fit into any of the other categories. You could order custom made boxes for large paintings and rugs and carpets.

A packing kit of the kind mentioned above can easily pack the belongings of a three room house. You could always purchase a few extra boxes for your unique requirement. Oh, and the kits come with strong packing tape and marker pens, so you know exactly what goods are in what box later. A kitchen kit comes with the proper packing material for knives and breakable and dangerous kitchen items, and can be purchased separately if required. Some companies very often throw in a few extra boxes for odds and ends like coat hangers etc. This article should give you a good idea of what you can expect out of a ready made packing kit. Once you have this idea you can decide if you want to purchase one of these.

Remember, by no means are we saying that a kit like this will ensure that every little item is packed when you finish. You may very well need to customize your kit by adding a little to it here and there in the form of more boxes. However, it is a good skeleton plan to start with.

Top 10 Tips to Ensure a Smooth Experience on Moving Day

Most people know someone who has a horror story about moving companies. If you follow these tips you won’t get caught.

1. You’ve chosen your mover so ask them to send you a copy of the contract in advance.
It’s boring but you really need to read the fine print. The person you booked the job with over the phone was concerned with getting your business. There may be differences between what he said on the phone and what’s on the contract. The crew that shows up probably will not care what the person on the phone said.

2. Additional charges to watch out for and ask about. Your moving company may claim these are industry standard but they are not. You won’t have room to negotiate once they show up and you sign the contract. Things to consider: are they charging for steps? Do they bill on the hour or half hour? Do they charge travel time for local moves? Are they going to demand payment before unloading the truck?

3. Book at least two weeks in advance. You’ll get cheaper rates and you’ll have the opportunity to take a look at the contract they sent you. As well, be less concerned with the cheapest quote and more concerned with the companies reputation.

4. Boxes. If you require over 50 boxes give yourself plenty of time to accumulate them from local businesses. If you’re reusing boxes check the bottoms for rot. Don’t fill any box over 50 pounds. Finally, have at least some of them stacked and ready to go by the door and don’t have them randomly scattered about the place. This will save you $50-$100 off the bill at least.

5. Was there anything that was difficult to get into your home? Let them know. Think through whether your pull out couch or armoire is going to present an obstacle to a timely move. If you have press board furniture like Ikea do not load up the drawers and then tape it shut. Take the shelves out of things. If something is very fragile consider taking it in your car.

6. Insurance. Contrary to their advertisement, most moving companies self insure. They will not pay full value for any damage. In fact normally the base insurance is 60 cents a pound which is negligible and there is usually a cap on the damages they will pay per item. Read the contract. Luckily your home insurance is a great resource. Call your insurance agent and ask what they would recommend.

7. If it’s a dusty environment then wipe down everything as much as possible. Try to avoid having the movers get a face full of dust or cat hair. They will look after your stuff better if they can see you’ve taken some effort.

8. Have the tools to take your furniture apart. We’re talking Allen keys, pliers and wrenches. It’s Murphy’s Law that you will need them if you don’t have them and the movers may not have a tool box.

9. If your job is going to take more than 3 hours then buy the movers something to eat. They will be padding their time if they leave. As well, discuss the route that will get them to the destination in the shortest time.

10. If they have a done a good job at the end, tip them appropriately. They will be grateful and it will add to your feeling good about how the day went.

Compare Moving Quotes Carefully

So you got that big promotion and need to move across country this year? What’s the best way to do it you ask?  When hiring a moving company there are many different things you need to consider, among then being price of course, but for your sake please don’t just go on how much they are going to charge you as that can lead to a disaster.

Well the first thing I would recommend doing is figuring out exactly what you posses that is going to need to be packed by the movers, moved by the movers and unloaded by the movers. There are plenty of things in your household that with a little initiative and bubble wrap you can pack up and get ready for the movers yourself, so why pay someone to do it? Now that you have that taken care of decide what can drive down with you, you’d be amazed how much crap you can cram in a car. If you’re flying, obviously it will be a very small pile of luggage but anything you can take with will save money in the next. Now comes the fun part; if you have big things like couches, big screens, and refrigerators that will be coming with I’d recommend this next step that most people don’t think about doing. Buy a few six packs and a half dozen pizzas and convince your friends to help you come move all that stuff to the living room or whatever room is close to the entrance. This way when you have the mover come take a look at what you have its all right there and then on moving day the movers will love you and you’ll save money if you’re being charge by the hour.

So now that you’ve done all the preparation work it’s time to actually start collecting quotes and trying to figure out who you’ll trust your loving possessions to. There are many different ways of doing this and many different schools of thought on the subject so I’ll just cover a few basics. The most obvious way is to just pull out the yellow book and call up a few of them and see if they’ll give you an estimate, but remember that it is just that, an estimate. A more modern way would be to use the internet to compare prices, using onlines services will speed up the process as you’ll get multiple quotes at once.

Now that you have a decent amount of quotes it’s time to dig a little deeper. I would next suggest going to their physical location and checking out the operation. If it seems like 2 guys renting trucks then I’d pass on them. What you’re looking for is a company with their own trucks, with permanent labels on them, a clean organized warehouse and any other signs that they are a cohesive working business. You should also know that every moving company is required by law to provide you with a “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet. If they don’t provide you with this, cross them off the list and move on. Call the ones that seemed like the best-oiled and see if they’ll come to your house to give a more accurate estimate, if they say no, then cut em from the list. After they’ve given you a more accurate estimate make sure to ask for their DOT number which is essentially their certification with the federal government to be moving your stuff. Take the number and go to SaferSys.org and click on the Company Snapshot link and look them up. This will tell you if they have up to date paperwork, how many registered vehicles they have and how much insurance they carry, anything under $750,000 should be taken from the list.

By now you should have a list of movers that have given you a fairly accurate quote, passed a physical inspection, and a governmental inspection. The only thing left to do is maybe check online for reviews of them either just Googling them or checking with the Better Business Bureau for complaints, or even word of mouth reviews from friends can be handy. Once you’ve chosen who you want to use be sure to understand everything on the paper they will no doubt be asking you to sign, and never sign a blank piece of paper. On the day of the move if they don’t show up with one of their trucks or anything seems fishy, fire them on the spot since you have to be comfortable with them handling your possessions.

Well hopefully something I’ve said here will be put to good use and prevent you from choosing the wrong company. It really isn’t rocket science, just make sure everything checks out, you understand the contract you’ll be signing and that in the end you are comfortable with the company because in the end the only person you can blame will be yourself, so do your homework!!

Four Steps to Moving Into an Apartment

Moving is a big life change, but it doesn’t have to be a loathsome task. With a little planning and preparation, moving into your new apartment can be a smooth and positive experience. This article will help you make the transition into your new home.

Utilities
Once you have done the work of scouting and choosing an apartment community to move to, and have become approved, the very first thing you should do is contact your service providers for a transfer of service. Electric, gas and cable services will need at least 10 days notice to ensure a seamless transition and allow for fewer chances of breaks in service. Even if your apartment community provides all bills paid, you should check to make sure this step will still need to be taken in the spirit of erring on the side of caution.

If your unit has a security system included, it is crucial to establish your own account with the company. Having your name and contact information, as well as password and any other personal identifiers on file is crucial for a monitored security provider.

Move-In Inspection
Always request a move-in inspection and obtain any signatures necessary for a damage report if there are any imperfections in your apartment unit prior to shifting in. Keep a copy of this report.

The Move
Once your things are boxed up and ready to shift, contacting your local moving company is the fastest and safest way to get your belongings moved to your new home. Relying on friends and family to help often lends you to frustration and having to work around everyone else’s schedule. Additionally, a reputable moving company will be liable for any damage, whereas a friend would not be!

Testing Your Service
Once you pick up your keys, the first thing to do is check that your utilities and services are all in working order. This is important if you have a moving truck with perishable food in the parking lot and the fridge is not working, or the power has not been turned on. Test your smoke detectors as well, and replace batteries if needed.

Lastly, double-check that your employer, your bank and any other relevant party have your new address. Put in a change of address with the post office and make sure you include your unit number. Before submitting it, reread to ensure all the information is correct.

By following these tips and advice, the shift to your new home will be as stress-free as possible. It won’t be long before you are unpacking the last box and enjoying your new digs.
