Moving A Sofa? These Tips Will Go A Long Way

May 19, 2010

Moving a sofa does not always work with pure determination, sometimes you need good ole fashion planning. A sofa is heavy and awkward, so spending a few moments to plan the hows, wheres and whys will keep your back strong and your sofa protected. Before moving a sofa you need to get a “feel” for the weight.

To get a feel for the weight of a sofa, you should squat down near one end of the sofa and place your hands underneath. At this point you don’t want to lift the sofa off the ground completely but you want to lift one end about six inches off the floor. This step will let you know how much weight you will be dealing with.

Is the sofa so light that two men should easily be able to carry it 100 feet without breaking a sweat, or is the sofa so heavy that two men plus a lot of skill will be needed? If its the latter case, this article will go along way in ensuring that your sofa gets to its final destination safely.

If you’re reading this, chances are you have a heavy sofa. As a professional mover in the Knoxville Tennessee area, I’ve realized that its not always brute strength that gets the job done, sometimes its brute brain power. So lets think our way through this task.

Remove any obstacles in the path of the final destination of the sofa. It will be a bad day for anyone who trips and falls on a Monopoly game while carrying around a 250lb sofa. Now that the path is clear, its time to wrap/pad the sofa so that it will not be scratched, marred, or ripped on a nail while moving. Keep the blankets (You can get these from Uhaul, Budget for a great price) tight as possible so that you wont drop the sofa.

Next you will want to slowly lift the sofa–just be sure that you and your moving partner are on the same page communication wise. Even though there are two of you, you will want to move as one. The movements should be slow and methodical to ensure your back does not twist during transport.

Now you’re carrying the sofa, and your feeling the weight of this heavy beast. You may begin to feel the veins in your neck throb, and you may notice your partners face flushed with blood. If you’re not straining, keep going. If you’re partner’s face is pouring sweat, and he looks like he’s next to death, lower the sofa and take a break. This sofa may need to be carried 5 feet and lowered….5 more feet and lowered…5 more feet and lowered.

If you’re dealing with an extremely heavy sofa (sofa beds), many breaks may be what’s needed. Just remember to pace yourself when dealing with heavy furniture. A good pace and deep breaths will keep the body’s energy stored, and it will help you to meet your goal of getting the job done.
