Moving companies tend to be the kind of business that people want to pay as little as possible for their services. However, there are some good reasons why it is better to look around and invest a bit more when it comes to movers; and the same holds true for international moving – probably in a much bigger way. Moving companies offer a service that people take for granted. Simply because your mates might be able to help you cart your furniture to your new flat, does not mean that they can do the same kind of job as a competent and reliable moving services provider.
Movers can be found in two distinct categories – local and international. Local moving companies will service your immediate city and might even offer moving services to neighbouring cities, but they will not take care of any overseas removals. International moving can be done by either an overseas removals company or by freight forwarders – although the latter tend to specialise in commercial transportation solutions. Aside from the two major categories, moving companies can then be further broken down into their specialties. Some movers will target certain niches and will only cater to people needing moving options in those niches. For instance: antiques/fine art, automotive vehicles, live organs, computer equipment, musical instruments, pets, etc…
When faced with a removal of any kind, your first thought should be to assess whether you truly want to tackle the move by yourself with some mates, or whether you would be better off hiring the services of experienced movers. Once you have established that you need professionals for the job, you will then have to look at the different moving companies in your neighbourhood and determine what kind of movers you need. If you need specialty services then you can whittle down your shortlist quite quickly. However, if you need general moving services then you might have to make several phone calls or visit several websites before making your shortlist. Find out what each company charges and what services are included in that price. Also ask about hidden costs, accessory services and insurance coverage.
Once you have your shortlist of moving companies with the moving quotes, you can start by shying away from prices that seem too good to be true – they probably are. Remember that it costs money to operate a moving truck and to pay movers. A quick calculation will tell you what the minimum costs of a move should be – take the kilometres that need to be driven, calculate how much fuel you will need and the cost of that fuel, throw in the salary for at least two movers and factor in insurance costs. Your rough estimate will probably be lower than what you should expect to pay, but if a company offers you services at below that cost – then run. You can be sure that they will hit you with additional charges later on.
It is only by doing your homework that you will be able to make the right choice when it comes to hiring moving companies. However, if you take the time, then you will be able to get it right.
