Moving is a big life change, but it doesn’t have to be a loathsome task. With a little planning and preparation, moving into your new apartment can be a smooth and positive experience. This article will help you make the transition into your new home.
Utilities
Once you have done the work of scouting and choosing an apartment community to move to, and have become approved, the very first thing you should do is contact your service providers for a transfer of service. Electric, gas and cable services will need at least 10 days notice to ensure a seamless transition and allow for fewer chances of breaks in service. Even if your apartment community provides all bills paid, you should check to make sure this step will still need to be taken in the spirit of erring on the side of caution.
If your unit has a security system included, it is crucial to establish your own account with the company. Having your name and contact information, as well as password and any other personal identifiers on file is crucial for a monitored security provider.
Move-In Inspection
Always request a move-in inspection and obtain any signatures necessary for a damage report if there are any imperfections in your apartment unit prior to shifting in. Keep a copy of this report.
The Move
Once your things are boxed up and ready to shift, contacting your local moving company is the fastest and safest way to get your belongings moved to your new home. Relying on friends and family to help often lends you to frustration and having to work around everyone else’s schedule. Additionally, a reputable moving company will be liable for any damage, whereas a friend would not be!
Testing Your Service
Once you pick up your keys, the first thing to do is check that your utilities and services are all in working order. This is important if you have a moving truck with perishable food in the parking lot and the fridge is not working, or the power has not been turned on. Test your smoke detectors as well, and replace batteries if needed.
Lastly, double-check that your employer, your bank and any other relevant party have your new address. Put in a change of address with the post office and make sure you include your unit number. Before submitting it, reread to ensure all the information is correct.
By following these tips and advice, the shift to your new home will be as stress-free as possible. It won’t be long before you are unpacking the last box and enjoying your new digs.

Moving a sofa does not always work with pure determination, sometimes you need good ole fashion planning. A sofa is heavy and awkward, so spending a few moments to plan the hows, wheres and whys will keep your back strong and your sofa protected. Before moving a sofa you need to get a “feel” for the weight.
To get a feel for the weight of a sofa, you should squat down near one end of the sofa and place your hands underneath. At this point you don’t want to lift the sofa off the ground completely but you want to lift one end about six inches off the floor. This step will let you know how much weight you will be dealing with.
Is the sofa so light that two men should easily be able to carry it 100 feet without breaking a sweat, or is the sofa so heavy that two men plus a lot of skill will be needed? If its the latter case, this article will go along way in ensuring that your sofa gets to its final destination safely.
If you’re reading this, chances are you have a heavy sofa. As a professional mover in the Knoxville Tennessee area, I’ve realized that its not always brute strength that gets the job done, sometimes its brute brain power. So lets think our way through this task.
Remove any obstacles in the path of the final destination of the sofa. It will be a bad day for anyone who trips and falls on a Monopoly game while carrying around a 250lb sofa. Now that the path is clear, its time to wrap/pad the sofa so that it will not be scratched, marred, or ripped on a nail while moving. Keep the blankets (You can get these from Uhaul, Budget for a great price) tight as possible so that you wont drop the sofa.
Next you will want to slowly lift the sofa–just be sure that you and your moving partner are on the same page communication wise. Even though there are two of you, you will want to move as one. The movements should be slow and methodical to ensure your back does not twist during transport.
Now you’re carrying the sofa, and your feeling the weight of this heavy beast. You may begin to feel the veins in your neck throb, and you may notice your partners face flushed with blood. If you’re not straining, keep going. If you’re partner’s face is pouring sweat, and he looks like he’s next to death, lower the sofa and take a break. This sofa may need to be carried 5 feet and lowered….5 more feet and lowered…5 more feet and lowered.
If you’re dealing with an extremely heavy sofa (sofa beds), many breaks may be what’s needed. Just remember to pace yourself when dealing with heavy furniture. A good pace and deep breaths will keep the body’s energy stored, and it will help you to meet your goal of getting the job done.

Moving companies tend to be the kind of business that people want to pay as little as possible for their services. However, there are some good reasons why it is better to look around and invest a bit more when it comes to movers; and the same holds true for international moving – probably in a much bigger way. Moving companies offer a service that people take for granted. Simply because your mates might be able to help you cart your furniture to your new flat, does not mean that they can do the same kind of job as a competent and reliable moving services provider.
Movers can be found in two distinct categories – local and international. Local moving companies will service your immediate city and might even offer moving services to neighbouring cities, but they will not take care of any overseas removals. International moving can be done by either an overseas removals company or by freight forwarders – although the latter tend to specialise in commercial transportation solutions. Aside from the two major categories, moving companies can then be further broken down into their specialties. Some movers will target certain niches and will only cater to people needing moving options in those niches. For instance: antiques/fine art, automotive vehicles, live organs, computer equipment, musical instruments, pets, etc…
When faced with a removal of any kind, your first thought should be to assess whether you truly want to tackle the move by yourself with some mates, or whether you would be better off hiring the services of experienced movers. Once you have established that you need professionals for the job, you will then have to look at the different moving companies in your neighbourhood and determine what kind of movers you need. If you need specialty services then you can whittle down your shortlist quite quickly. However, if you need general moving services then you might have to make several phone calls or visit several websites before making your shortlist. Find out what each company charges and what services are included in that price. Also ask about hidden costs, accessory services and insurance coverage.
Once you have your shortlist of moving companies with the moving quotes, you can start by shying away from prices that seem too good to be true – they probably are. Remember that it costs money to operate a moving truck and to pay movers. A quick calculation will tell you what the minimum costs of a move should be – take the kilometres that need to be driven, calculate how much fuel you will need and the cost of that fuel, throw in the salary for at least two movers and factor in insurance costs. Your rough estimate will probably be lower than what you should expect to pay, but if a company offers you services at below that cost – then run. You can be sure that they will hit you with additional charges later on.
It is only by doing your homework that you will be able to make the right choice when it comes to hiring moving companies. However, if you take the time, then you will be able to get it right.

Packing peanuts and bubble wrap are two very popular products use for protecting the contents of articles that are stores in boxes or being shipped. But there is a never ending debate on which is best for providing packing protection? Here is help in deciding between packing peanuts and bubble wrap, which is best?
What are They?
Packing peanuts are a loose fill material made of primarily Styrofoam. They get their name because they are similar in size and shape to that of a peanut. There are different versions of packing peanuts made. Some are made of corn starch and will dissolve in water making them popular for biodegradable reasons.
Other versions have unique characteristics based on the color of the peanut. Green is 70% or more recycled polystyrene, white is 79% or more virgin resin, while pink is anti static.
Bubble wrap is a transparent and pliable plastic material with regular spaced bubbles filled with air. It is sold in sheets or rolls. The bubbles that provide the cushioning come in different sizes to accommodate the different sizes of objects that need protection. To provide adequate protection of items in many cases multiple layers of the bubble wrap may be necessary.
Some versions have anti static characteristics to dissipate static charges that could cause problems for some sensitive electrical products and components. There are also versions of bubble wrap that are biodegradable.
Unique Characteristics
Generally speaking packing peanuts work best to fill the voids in a box or container. Their shape and soft nature allows them to take on the many shapes necessary to fill spaces quite well. Because they provide loose fill packing, the contents will still be able to move in the container slightly. This option works well for larger less fragile items.
Considering the best use for bubble wrap, fragile is the key word here. If an item is of a fragile nature, bubble wrap works great because it can be folded around the item for protection. Sometimes multiple wraps around an object will be needed.
On occasion, both bubble wrap and packing peanuts will work great together. This is especially the case for smaller items and those that are more fragile. Use the bubble product to wrap around the fragile items and then place in a box. Then fill in the voids of space in the box with packing peanuts.
Final Thoughts
In general packing peanuts can be a bit of a nuisance in that they are messy and hard to clean up. Bubble wrap on the other hand is pretty neat; it doesn’t scatter all over the floor and it can be fun to pop the bubbles!

Moving can be hectic and generally not the most fun. This is especially true for college students moving out of a dorm room. But if you are well planned moving does not have to be something you dread. Here are helpful tips for moving out of a dorm room that will make that day easy.
Be Prepared
First thing you need to do is be prepared. Be sure to check to see when you are expected to move. Many dorms have special days and even times for sections or floors of the dorm. You want to make sure you are fully prepared in advance so you know the day and time designed for your move. You do not want to be caught by surprise. Also make sure you know when your room inspection will be and what is required so you get as much of your deposit back as possible.
Now that you know when the day and time is set for your move you can begin to plan and pace yourself.
What You Will Need to Buy
First you will want to get sturdy boxes and some sort of material for packing everything in and to protect fragile items. Cardboard boxes usually do fins for this type of a move. Old newspapers work great as packing material. Be sure to also buy packing tape to secure your boxes shut. Finally purchase a marking pen.
How to Pack
Packing your belongings into boxes is somewhat of an art. You don’t want to pack in such a way that objects get broken. You also don’t want to over pack so that the boxes are too heavy to lift.
Tape the bottom of each box so the boxes do not open up on you.
Put fragile items in a box by themselves. Wrap your paper around each item for protection. As you place items in the box, put things in loosely. Do not pack items in tight. Put extra paper between the items for added protection.
For heavier items you probably will only want to pack the box about half full. Occasionally test the box to see how heavy it is so it can be lifted.
With your marking pen, write in a few places (top and sides) what is in the box.
Stack your packed boxes with the heavier items as the bottom of the stack and the fragile items at the top.
Stack your boxes in a corner of the room so they do not take up much space and allow you area to work and continue packing.
Last Minute Tips
The day before you are to move make sure everything is packed and sealed in boxes so that you are ready to go. All that you should have left are objects you need for the final 24 hours. Think through what you will need and keep only those items out. You should have ready a final box or suitcase for these last items so they can easily be packed away the day of the move.
Also, be sure to keep out any items, including clothes and essentials you may need for the day or two (or however long) it will take you to complete your move. If you do this you will not have to be rummaging through boxes during the move itself to try and find something you will need.
The last thing to do is clean your room as it is suggested in your checkout guidelines. Make sure you allow plenty of time for this before your room is inspected.
Be sure to have all garbage removed from your room prior to the inspection.
A Plus Moving moves and relocates all the Boston area colleges and universities.
